BBC Breakfast's Sally Nugent shares concern for co-star after 'sad' observation

BBC Breakfast's Sally Nugent couldn't help but express concern for her colleague Jon Kay after the duo discussed a turtle named Nazare.

The loggerhead turtle had been discovered stranded on a Cumbrian beach earlier in the year and was subsequently rehabilitated.

Recently, Nazare was triumphantly returned to the sea, with viewers treated to the heartwarming moment of her release into the ocean.

But as the video concluded, Jon appeared visibly moved, prompting Sally to remark: "What a great story, oh you look a bit sad!"

Jon revealed that it was the handler in the footage, who regretted not having the chance to bid farewell to Nazare, that had touched his heart, confessing: "It's heartbreaking!"

Sally reassured him that Nazare was now enjoying her freedom, to which he responded hopefully: "fingers crossed."

She added: "No algae, no nothing, she looks great!"

The presenters then informed the audience they would later chat with Todd German from Sea Life Scarborough for an update on the turtle, reports the Express.

In a light-hearted exchange, Sally quipped: "I wonder if he's even heard from her. I bet she hasn't been in touch at all."

Jon humorously added: "She doesn't write, she doesn't call, she doesn't email, nothing!"

Their laughter continued as Sally concluded: "She's living her best life, having a fabulous time."

The segment also shared that Nazare had been found by a dog walker, covered in cuts and algae, barely showing signs of life, before her remarkable recovery.

However, this wasn't the turtles first time around humans. Scott Blacker gave the lowdown to BBC about her previous stint in captivity due to the satellite tracker she sported on her shell.

He revealed: "We found out that she was released from the coast of France from La Rochelle aquarium where she had been rehabilitated in June 2023.

"So, it wasn't the first time she'd been in a facility like ours."

BBC Breakfast continues weekdays on BBC One from 6am.
