BREAKING: Tragic shooting near Tennessee State University leaves one dead and 10 injured during homecoming game

A shooting near in Nashville during a homecoming game on Saturday has left at least one person dead and 10 others injured. The incident occurred around 5.30pm at the intersection of Jefferson Street and 27th Avenue, as reported by The Tennessean.

Students received a text warning from the university about active shooters off campus at the same time. The suspects, described as a Black man in green clothing and another Black man in a black and white top with jeans, possibly travelling in a Ford Fusion, are still at large, reports .

The homecoming week for Tennessee State University saw a parade and street fair on Jefferson Street before the football game against Eastern Illinois University began at Nissan Stadium at 5pm. The area around the intersection of 27th Avenue and Jefferson Street has been cordoned off by police, and the injured victims have been taken to hospital.

People are advised to be cautious if travelling in the area.

Addressing members of the press on Saturday evening, Nashville police spokesperson Brooke Reese said that five of the victims were transported by ambulance to local , while a further five others were dropped off by private vehicles, reports

"At this point, there are 10 victims who have been confirmed to have been involved in that gunfire, one of which is deceased," Reese told reporters.

Some of those who were being treated at area hospitals "are also suspected to have been involved in the gunfire," Reese added.

At this time, the circumstances that led up to the shooting remain unknown. There is also no immediate word on whether a suspect has been arrested.

The identity of the person killed has also yet to be released.
