Fury as 'selfish' flytipper dumps mountains of rubbish in UK countryside

Send Push

These staggering photos capture mountains of rubbish dumped on a roadside by a "selfish" flytipper.

Carpets, backpacks, blankets, mattresses, half-empty tubs of paint, empty boxes and many other pieces of junk line the rural lane near Pontypool, south Wales.

Police have branded the behaviour "selfish" in an appeal on social media to trace the individual, who they suspect abandoned the litter on Tuesday between 4pm and 5pm.

A post on X, formerly Twitter, by Gwent Police read on Tuesday: "One Police and three @torfaencouncil vehicles, needed for a blocked road causing disruption to homes and businesses this evening. All thanks to the selfish #Flytipper who dumped this mess on Coch Y North Road, #Pontypool between 16:00-16:45 today."

The tweet, seen by hundreds of users, sparked anger among the community in South Wales. One reply reads: "That is both shocking and appalling. Hopefully, you will be able to trace those responsible."

The piles of mess blocked the road, which connects Pontypool, Gwent, with rural villages in the Welsh Valleys in the west and the town of Blackwood on the Sirhowy River. The disruption affected businesses and residents in these areas, police said.

A resident posted on social media: "This is disgusting." Another said: "I saw a similar incident on the Gwent Levels, which is a shocking mess a lot of the time. I could pass on my bike but cars couldn’t." A further post online reads: "Another person with zero societal responsibility."

The Mirror has contacted Tofaen Council for comment. Anyone who might have information on the culprit is asked to contact police by calling 101 and quoting the log reference number 363. You can also report it via the Gwent Police website, by direct messaging them on social media, or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

In February, angry villagers blocked two vans suspected of fly-tipping on a country lane - forcing them to clear away a mountain of waste. The police were called and made arrests in Great Packington, Warwickshire, describing it as some of the "worst fly-tipping they had seen in a long time." Two men found at the scene were supervised as they picked up pipes, building waste and black bin bags and reloaded the vans.
