Inside Coronation Street Bernie Winter star's marriage to famous soap star wife

Send Push

Coronation Street's Bernie Winter, played by Jane Hazlegrove, may have been unlucky in love on the ITV soap, but her real-life romance tells a different story.

Recently, Bernie has faced some tough times in Weatherfield, including the death of her son Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) following a battle with MND (motor neurone disease). Fans will recall Paul was diagnosed last year, and earlier in the month, Paul took his final breath in emotional scenes on the ITV soap.

However, off-screen, Jane Hazlegrove, who has portrayed the beloved character since 2019, enjoys a much happier love life. The soap star married to her famous wife Isobel Middleton known for her roles in Emmerdale and Harry Potter.

The couple tied the knot in 2015 and prefer to keep their relationship private. In 2019, Hazlegrove opened up about her relationship with Middleton during an appearance on Lorraine, reports the Daily Star.

She effused: "She's sensational, a really beautiful woman. I am very obsessed." Jane humorously suggested that their relationship, which has spanned over 28 years, has endured because they've never shared screen time.

Despite not having worked together on the big screen, both have had their fair share of soap opera roles. Isobel has portrayed three different characters in Emmerdale throughout the years. In 2020, she played Jean Rawson, acted as a barrister during Simon McManus' 2018 trial, and took on the role of Dr Lane in 2014.

EastEnders fans might also recognise her from her stint as Sadie Banks on the show, and she lent her voice to several characters in the Harry Potter series. On the other hand, Jane has graced shows like London's Burning, The Bill, Doctors and Holby City before landing her role on Coronation Street.

Jane and Isobel officially became civil partners in 2010, but initially, the Corrie actress wasn't keen on formalising their relationship. In a chat with Metro, she revealed how her perspective shifted when her partner fell ill.

Jane remembered: "The reason we did it was because Isobel hadn't been well. It became very clear that I wasn't really allowed to know anything about how she was because we weren't related, even though we'd lived together for 15 years.

""It made me quite cross that I had no say in what happened to her. It all worked out fine, thankfully, but the morning after the civil partnership, I remember us saying over breakfast, 'No-one can touch us now'.

Since then, the couple have soared from one high to another. Most recently, they were snapped twinning in matching sunglasses onboard the Coronation Street bus at Manchester Pride.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
