Inside 'odd' abandoned former psychiatric hospital turned student village as demolition looms

Eerie pictures show the inside of the abandoned Storthes Hall student village, taken before the site is completely demolished.

The historic Storthes Hall site in Huddersfield has been used to house the town’s students since it was converted into a student village in the 1990s. The grand country estate held a number of uses before being used by students, including as a psychiatric hospital in the early 20th century.

A planning application from Ubrique was approved to demolish the buildings on site, minus those that are listed, and build 261 homes in their place. Urban explorer Daniel Sims, 35, recently took a look inside the former student accommodation in Huddersfield, weeks after the final residents were moved out.

Daniel decided to take one final look before the site becomes nothing but a distant memory.

He told Yorkshire Live: "I live in Huddersfield so I heard they had suddenly shut down the student village. I decided to explore the site just before everything was stripped out as heard they had plans to demolish all but two buildings.

"I used to drink at the old D-bar in my student days and before that, it was mad to see how so much had changed and at the same time had not. The place holds a lot of memories for a lot of people and just seems like a huge waste to demolish it."

Asked what it was like inside, Daniel added: "I wouldn't not say it was creepy, even though the place has a dark history, more just odd as usually the place is full of life but watching people strip the place just leaves a bare feeling as you know it as an end of an era."
