As his former Vera co-stars prepare to see themselves in the final series, Kenny Doughty has secured a significant new TV drama role, alongside his famous wife Ashley Jensen.
In spring 2023, many viewers were disappointed when Kenny, who was the second sidekick to star with Brenda Blethyn in Vera, revealed he had left his role as Aiden Healy after eight years. Kenny shot his last scenes as Aiden at the end of 2022, for the special The Rising Tide, which attracted a large audience to ITV on Day last year.
Months after leaving Vera, Kenny secretly married Ashley, and the couple made their first public appearance as husband and wife at the 2023 Scottish BAFTA awards. Earlier this year, Kenny travelled to Shetland as she filmed the latest series of the drama of the same name, where she now plays the lead role.
After announcing that he will soon star with Poirot legend David Suchet in the new Channel 5 thriller Au Pair, Kenny has now revealed that he will be starring with his wife Ashley in Wax Fruit. On , he described it as a "Scottish period drama with wonderful scripts, locations but most importantly characters and stories for everyone," reports .
The Herald newspaper broke the story, informing its readers that the "long forgotten Scottish masterpiece was being brought back to life in an ambitious TV production."
Kenny's fans were quick off the mark, as one, evidently not over his departure from Vera, responded: "Broken man when you left Vera," while another remarked: "A wonderful acting couple."
