Man City hero Phil Foden's desperate bid to get England teammates hooked on fishing

Fishing-mad footie star Phil Foden has revealed he was trout to get his England team-mates up for the carp during this summer’s Euros.

But the Man City ace just couldn’t get their at-tench-ion after discovering there were a couple of small lakes around the exclusive golf resort where they were staying in Germany. “They weren’t having it,” said the 24-year-old midfielder.

But he did eventually manage to urge Crystal Palace left-winger Eberechi Eze to take the bait – and helped him land his first carp. Foden opened up about the kind of tackle he loves on the Spooners fishing vlog on YouTube – and the “buzz” he gets from landing a big one.

He joined fishing pro Neil Spooner and his son Freddie on a camping trip where he showed off his custom fishing rods engraved with Foden47 – the shirt number he has always had at City. While on the three-day trip, Foden was thrilled to score an angling goal by landing a 28lb carp. The star said he started fishing with “my old man” when he was about five years old and has “loved it ever since”. Speaking by the side of an Oxfordshire lake he told the vlog: “Whatever fishing I’m doing, I enjoy it.”

And he revealed how he loves getting “out of the way” from his hectic footballer lifestyle, saying: “No one is going to mither me here and I can just relax. I just love the buzz of catching any fish.”

Foden joins a lengthening line of reel-life fishing footie legends including Paul Gascoigne, David Seaman, and David Beckham. And he has an angling ally back at work – Man City boss and ex-Barcelona star Pep Guardiola is also a fishing fanatic.
