Mike Tyson punch stats from last fight speak volumes ahead of Jake Paul bout

Mike Tyson landed fewer than 10 punches per round when he was last in the ring against Roy Jones Jr.

Tyson came out of retirement to take on fellow legend Jones Jr in an exhibition bout in 2020 which was ultimately scored a draw despite Tyson appearing to edge the fight. The rules of the contest were very similar to those which have been announced for Tyson's forthcoming fight against Jake Paul, despite it being classed a professional bout.

Tyson and Paul were due to clash in July but the former undisputed heavyweight champion was forced to delay the bout after suffering an ulcer flare-up. He has since insisted he has recovered and will be healthy for the rescheduled date of November 15.

But a look at the stats from his bout against Jones suggests Tyson will struggle to deliver on his promise to knock out the YouTuber. Although Tyson outlanded Jones Jr by 67-37 over the eight rounds, he failed to land a jab in two of the rounds, instead relying on his power shots.

And with Jones failing to land a jab in three of the sessions, Tyson had little to worry about coming back from his younger opponent, something which is unlikely to be the case against Paul.

But that hasn't stopped Tyson promising to stop the social media star, saying recently: "I'm very prepared to knock out Jake Paul. I'm very prepared. I had a small adversity. I got sick, but I feel good. I'm just ready. I'm just ready. I'm going to do my talk and I'm going to talk my shit, but I'm ready to fight.

"I'm beautiful and I've been back training for a while, like two weeks, three weeks. I’m in camp. As soon as I catch this guy, it's over. Jake Paul is going to be running around the ring, but as soon as I catch this guy, it's going to be totally over. I'm going to f*** you up."

But the fight has come under fierce criticism with promoter Eddie Hearn hitting out at "idiots" who are backing the fight. “What on earth are we doing? I’m lucky enough to have a business where we don’t need to do that, and I never will do that,” he told the Daily Mail. “Anyone that thinks that Tyson should be in the ring right now either doesn’t have his best interests at heart or is an idiot.

" Mike Tyson left the sport of boxing, which was, what, 20 years ago, I don’t know, something like that. You honestly think that a fighter that was shot to pieces 20 years ago should now be coming back? I know he is only fighting Jake Paul, but it doesn’t matter. Jake Paul’s a powerful kid. He trains every day. He can punch."
