Premier League release statement during Arsenal vs Bournemouth after controversial decision

The Premier League has released a statement after Bournemouth striker Evanilson scored a controversial goal against .

The Brazilian turned the game around at the Emirates Stadium by finishing off Marcus Tavernier’s headed effort toward goal. Earlier on, Declan Rice put the Gunners ahead before Dean Huijsen equalised for the Cherries.

Evanilson then put the Cherries ahead in controversial fashion. However, VAR checked the goal after and it was determined that there was no conclusive evidence he had indeed handled the ball.

During commentary of the game on BBC Five Live, Rob Green said: "In the VAR booth there's no evidence to say it's off the hand. It's not conclusive."

After a VAR check, the goal was allowed to stand which saw Mikel Arteta's side fall to their fourth defeat in the Premier League. A statement by the Premier League, explained: "The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by VAR – with no conclusive evidence that Evanilson handled the ball before scoring."

Co-commentator, Alan Smith added: "It’s Tavernier, No.16, that makes the dash and get the first contact to get the ball.

"Glancing into that danger area it is a wrestling match with Martin Odegaard, Evanilson wins that wrestling match just to get enough on it.

"Scruffy, poacher’s goal this one but a big one for Bournemouth. I said they looked the more likely, so it has proved.

"The arm was up in terms of getting hold of [Odegaard], maybe comes of the midriff, does it? It’s not conclusive.

"Seems to me it’s one of those you’re not gonna prove conclusively it hits the arm. It bounces up and bounces down, so it makes you think what has it hit to go down?

"Has it hit Odegaard’s arm? If it had come off the midriff I don’t think it would have gone down at that angle."

When the decision arrived, Smith continued: "Do you know what? I think that’s fair enough, because we can’t say conclusively whether it did [hit the arm].

"I thought it might of, but that’s not good enough."

Evanilson scored his 11th goal of the season after his red card was overturned for being sent off against

"An independent regulatory commission has removed Evanilson’s three-match ban following a successful claim of wrongful dismissal," read a Football Association statement.

Following the goal, Andoni Iraola became the first Bournemouth manager to lead the Cherries to a victory at the Emirates Stadium. and with it registered a double over the Gunners following a success in October on the south coast.
