Detailing her cleaning hack, the woman said: "I filled the bath with warm water and added about half a bag of soda crystals, these are really great for lots of things but especially for stripping laundry. And I knew these pillows needed it."

Keeping her audience updated, after showing progress an hour in, and highlighting the discoloured water, she said: "This is them after an hour and look at the colour of the water.

"Thinking about what must be in your pillows, we're talking about sweat, saliva and all sorts of bodily fluids that can build up overtime." She also claimed there could be dead skin cells and even pollen on your pillows.

She recommends a deep clean involving soaking, squeezing out excess water, draining in the bath, followed by a "proper clean" in the washing machine.

Her top tip is to wash them in their cases to maintain their shape, although she admits she skipped this step but compensated by adding bath mats for cushioning during the wash cycle.

The woman advised: "You'll want to do this on a sunny day, especially if you don't have a tumble dryer, so that you can reshape them outside in the sunshine."

While she didn't post a final image, her dad confirmed the pillows came out "fluffier" and smelling "much better". The cleaning hack has gone viral, racking up 2,700 comments and 296,000 likes.

One user bluntly said: "I just buy new ones," while another commented: "I just throw them away."
