Thomas Tuchel's one reservation about Man Utd job after talks with Jim Ratcliffe

Send Push

Sir Jim Ratcliffe faces a tough task in convincing Thomas Tuchel to overlook his main reservation about taking the Manchester United job if he targets the German to replace Erik ten Hag.

Tuchel was a leading candidate to replace Ten Hag in the summer after he left Bayern Munich. United ultimately decided to stick with the Dutchman and handed him a new contract, though that now appears to be a mistake.

Ten Hag has seen his side lose three of their opening seven Premier League games, slumping to 12th place in the table. Sunday's miserable defeat to Tottenham has put his reign on life support.

And with questions growing over his future, the identity of his successor will become a hot topic. Tuchel looks likely to be heavily linked with the job, with the German still out of work following his Bayern exit.

He previously held talks with United's controlling co-owner Ratcliffe in the summer. But he soon removed himself from contention before United opted to keep Ten Hag in his post.

According to Bild, Tuchel decided to pull out his talks due to the new structure Ratcliffe has put in place at Old Trafford. Omar Berrada has arrived as chief executive, Dan Ashworth has joined as sporting director and Jason Wilcox has been appointed as technical director.

But Tuchel made it clear he held reservations about working under such a set-up. It is claimed that Tuchel's assessment of the United squad was different to the club's chiefs, with the German taking a dim view of the men Ratcliffe brought in to lead the technical side.

United could well attempt to resurrect their interest in Tuchel if they decide to move on from Ten Hag. But the Dutchman will not go down without a fight and has insisted he is still the right man to lead the Red Devils.

"I think we all made, in togetherness, this decision to stay together, as an ownership, as a leadership group, in the summer. And also, we made the decision from a clear review, what we have to improve as an organisation and how also we want to construct a squad," he said.

"And they are all decision-making in togetherness, but also we knew it would take some time because of how the window went, some players late in, like Ugarte, we have to integrate him now.

"Also, we had to make some improvement in organisation, we still have to deal with some injuries, also from impact players, and I think we will get better there. We need some time. We are all on one page, together, the ownership, the leadership group, the staff and players group.

"There’s always a new game, there will be a new day, and it’s also obvious. You have to learn as a team. You can’t make such mistakes, so definitely, we have to address this. But we will bounce back."
