The Legend Behind Narasimha Jayanti

As per Hindu mythology, Lord Narasimha is the fourth avatar of Lord Vishnu. He took this unique form to protect his young devotee, Prahlada, from the wrath of his father, King Hiranyakashipu—a powerful demon king who had obtained a boon that made him nearly invincible.

The boon granted that he could not be killed by man or animal, inside or outside, during day or night, and not by any weapon or on land, water, or air. To circumvent this, Lord Vishnu manifested as Narasimha—a being neither fully man nor beast. He appeared at dusk, at the threshold of a palace, placed the king on his lap (neither land, water, nor sky), and killed him using his claws (not a weapon).

This dramatic and symbolic moment represented the ultimate triumph of good over evil, and remains one of the most powerful tales of divine justice in Hindu tradition.

How is Narasimha Jayanti Celebrated?
  • Fasting (Vrat): Devotees observe a fast, refraining from grains and in some cases, even water, from sunrise until the tithi ends.
  • Puja and Abhishekam: Lord Narasimha’s idol is bathed with water, milk, honey, and ghee, and adorned with flowers, turmeric, and sandalwood paste.
  • Chanting and Recitation: Sacred texts like Narasimha Kavach, Vishnu Sahasranama, and Bhagavata Purana are read or recited.
  • Sayana Kala Aarti: Evening worship during the Sayana Kala is considered especially auspicious.
  • Jagran (Night Vigil): Many devotees stay awake through the night, singing devotional songs and narrating the story of Narasimha.
