Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday nominated MP Abhishek Banerjee to represent the party in the multi-party delegations visiting various countries. The development came after parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju spoke to Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday morning and sought her suggestion, people in the know told ET.
"Smt Mamata Banerjee nominates Shri Abhishek Banerjee to represent us in the all-party delegation for India's global stand against terrorism. His voice will echo India's commitment to peace, justice and global cooperation," Trinamool said in a post on X.
Mamata Banerjee had said on Sunday that no one from the Trinamool is participating in the foreign delegation as no request had come to the 'mother party' suggesting names for the delegation. However, she clarified that Trinamool is not boycotting the delegation.
It is learnt that after Banerjee expressed her unhappiness, Rijiju called Mamata Banerjee and sought the name of the Trinamool representative for the delegation.
Abhishek Banerjee, who attended on Sunday the Standing Committee meeting that was briefed by foreign secretary Vikram Misri, said instead of sending parliamentarians, the family members of the martyrs or the survivors or the brave armed forces, who led Operation Sindoor, should be sent to foreign countries by the Centre.
Abhishek Banerjee has replaced Yusuf Pathan in the multiparty group headed by JDU's Sanjay Kumar Jha. The delegation will travel to Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan and Singapore. Rijiju also spoke to Uddhav Thackeray and got Sena (UBT) backing for the delegations.
