New Delhi: The BJP-led Chhattisgarh government has attracted investments worth Rs 967 crore in Naxal-affected Bastar region at its first investor meet on Thursday.
The biggest takeaway from the investor meet was that private investors have shown interest across Bastar and not just in Jagdalpur, which is the administrative headquarters of the region. The investments will be across different sectors, including tourism, healthcare, warehousing and cold storages.
According to statistics of the Chhattisgarh government, 33 investors proposed projects worth Rs 967.41 crore at the investor meet. The projects, as per estimates, have the potential to generate employment for about 2,200 persons. The biggest investment is of Rs 550 crore for a 350-bed multi-speciality hospital and medical college at Jagdalpur. Other big investments include Rs 85 crore for a 200-bed multi-upper speciality hospital at Geedam in Dantewada, Rs 75 crore for a hotel in Bastar, Rs 55 crore for another resort in Bastar, Rs 40 crore for a surgical glove manufacturing facility in Kanker, and Rs 33 crore for a muti-super speciality hospital in Jagdalpur.
The highest number of investors –– about 15 –– have proposed projects in Bastar. This is followed by six in Kanker, three each in Jagdalpur, Bijapur and Kondagaon and one each in Narayanpur, Dantewada and Bhanupratappur.
The government had organised the investor meet at Jagdalpur as part of its plan to generate employment even as it conducts security operations against Naxals. The Centre has set a target of March 2026 to make Bastar region Naxal free. So far, investments in the region had been driven by the public sector. National Mineral Development Corporation alone is spearheading projects valued at Rs 43,000 crore. Indian Railways has sanctioned investments worth Rs 5,200 crore. Road works of Rs 2,300 crore have been sanctioned. However, private investments pledged during the ‘Bastar Investor Connect programme’ are being seen as a sign of normalcy returning to the region.
As per government data, over the past 20 months since the BJP government was voted to power in November 2023, about 453 Naxals have been killed, 1,611 arrested, and 1,636 surrendered. Over 65 new security camps were established and more than 50 closed schools were reopened.
