Late in the night on September 2, a young IPS officer named Shashank Jaiswal saved the life of a road accident victim in South Delhi with some quick thinking and assistance.
Returning home from patrol duty, Jaiswal noticed a crowd gathered near Mahipalpur bypass around 8.10 pm. Upon investigation, he found a man bleeding heavily and lying motionless beside a fallen motorcycle, surrounded by onlookers who were not offering assistance.
Jaiswal quickly hailed an autorickshaw and, with help from his driver Jasbir, transported the injured man to the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre in Vasant Kunj. Jaiswal accompanied the victim in the auto while instructing other team members to clear the way for the emergency trip. Along the way, traffic constable Shailesh joined the effort to ensure the man reached the hospital quickly.
“The accident victim, doctors said, had sustained severe injuries to his head, mouth and other parts after falling from his bike. He had lost a significant amount of blood," Jaiswal said. The young officer stayed at the hospital for a while to ensure the injured man's well-being.
Police identified the victim as Anil Kumar, a resident of Rangpuri, near the accident site. The police tracked down Kumar’s family and informed them of the accident. Currently, Kumar is receiving treatment at the hospital and is reportedly out of danger.
An FIR for causing grievous hurt by negligent driving has been registered, and the police have initiated an investigation into the incident. Local police, under Jaiswal's direction, are prioritising the case to ensure a thorough and swift investigation.
Special Commissioner Ajay Chaudhary appreciated Jaiswal's quick action and concern for public safety, urging everyone to assist accident victims they encounter.
"A simple act of assistance can potentially save a life and prevent a family from being shattered," Chaudhary said.
Jaiswal acknowledged the role of several individuals who assisted in the rescue. He specifically mentioned the autorickshaw driver Deepak Pal, cab driver Deepak, and traffic constables Jasbir and Shailesh for their timely cooperation.
