In a scathing attack on the Congress, PM Modi said that the opposition party had become reliant on Pakistan for issues and that its allies have unfortunately become spokespersons of Pakistani propaganda.
"Opposing the armed forces, negativity for armed forces has been the old attitude of Congress...Pull up all of Pakistan’s statements and the statements of those who are opposing us here, they are exactly the same with full stop and comma...The country is surprised that Congress has given a clean chit to Pakistan. They dare to ask for proof that the Pahalgam attackers were from Pakistan," Modi said.
"Indian armed forces conducted surgical strikes, Congress sought proof from armed forces, but when they read the public mood, Congress changed tune to claim that their govts too had carried out surgical strikes," the prime minister added.
He further said that the Congress comes up with new excuses just for the sake of opposing after every action that the army takes against terrorism.
"Terrorists are crying, their masterminds are crying and seeing them cry, some people are crying here too. They tried to play a game during surgical strike, it didn't work. During airstrike, they tried playing another game. That didn't work either. When OperationSindoor took place, they adopted a new tactic - 'Why did you stop?' You need one or the other excuse to oppose. So, not just me but the entire country is laughing at you."
Indus Water Treaty
Speaking about the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, Modi said the treaty was singed by Nehru and allowed the World Bank to decide the fate of water of rivers originating from India, adding that the first PM agreed to give 80 pc water to Pakistan from rivers originating in India, leaving just 20 pc for large country like ours and called it the biggest blunder.
He said that the treaty deterred India's growth and caused problems to the farmers, saying that the water could have been used for hydro projects in India.
"After sharing waters with Pakistan, Nehru also gave money to Islamabad to build dams. Nehru knew of diplomacy that had no place for farmers."
"Successive govts did not correct Nehru's mistake of Indus Water Treaty; but we made it clear that blood, water cannot flow together," Modi added.
'Congress never had a vision for national security'
Modi said that the Congress had consistently compromised national security, adding that the party had to answer why it gave away a part of Kashmir to Pakistan (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir).
"The Congress party has never had a clear vision for India’s national security. What can we expect from them today? Congress has consistently compromised on national security. Today, those asking why we haven’t taken back PoK ... I ask in return: whose government allowed Pakistan to occupy PoK in the first place? The answer is clear."
He said that India was still paying for the mistakes of the previous Congress governments.
"India still suffering the pain of mistakes committed by previous Congress governments starting from Nehru. Then Congress governments lost opportunities to get back Pak-occupied Kashmir when India had Pakistan's land, soldiers in custody."
Self sufficiency in defence sector
The prime minister said that several reforms have been carried out in the defence sector over last decade, some of which were not even thought of earlier.
"India carried out reforms in armed forces in last decade that were never thought about earlier. We have opened up defence sector for private players; 100s of start-ups including those run by young women are operating now: Amid arms races, being self-reliant in defence sector is a must for world peace," Modi said.
Modi further said that some members from the opposition even mocked Operation Mahadev, launched to eliminate Pahalgam terrorists.
"Yesterday, our security forces successfully carried out Operation Mahadev and brought it to its conclusion. But I’m surprised, some people (referring to the Opposition) were sarcastically asking, ‘Why did it happen just yesterday?’ Was the operation scheduled based on the auspicious timing of Sawan ka Somwar? What has happened to these people? Has their frustration and hopelessness reached such extremes? For the past several weeks, they’ve been saying, ‘Operation Sindoor is fine, but what about the terrorists in Pahalgam?’ Now that action has been taken, they ask, ‘Why was it done yesterday?"
