New Delhi: India and China, led by their leaders, on Sunday sought to create an atmosphere that gave a political direction to keep the Line of Actual Control peaceful, signalling it would stabilize the overall bilateral relationship between the Asian giants amid turbulent geopolitics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday during their meeting in Tianjin pledged to work towards a "fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable" resolution of the festering boundary issue. Modi further said India is committed to taking forward its ties with China based on mutual trust, respect and sensitivity. The two leaders noted with satisfaction the successful disengagement last year and the maintenance of peace and tranquillity along the border areas since then. They expressed commitment to a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question proceeding from the political perspective of their overall bilateral relations and the long-term interests of the two peoples. They recognised the important decisions taken by the two Special Representatives in their talks earlier this month and agreed to further support their efforts.

On his part Xi said that it is the "right choice" for the two countries to be "friends" and they should not let the border dispute define their relations. "Both sides need to approach and handle our relationship from strategic heights and long-term perspective so as to realise the sustained, sound and steady development of our bilateral ties," he said. If the two countries keep to this overarching direction, specific matters in the bilateral relations will fall into place and there will be steady and sustained progress in bilateral ties, Xi said. Xi called on the two countries to strengthen strategic communication and deepen mutual trust, expand exchanges and cooperation to achieve mutual benefit and create a win-win situation, accommodate each other's concerns to get along in peace and harmony, and strengthen multilateral coordination to safeguard shared interests.

Later briefing reporters, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, "The situation on the boundary will be reflected in some way or the other on overall ties. Modi and Xi were of the view that differences between India and China should not be allowed to be turned into disputes. PM Modi underlined the need for peace and tranquillity in border areas for continued and smooth development of ties."
