Remember the sultry siren Bindiya in the 1997 Shah Rukh Khan-Madhuri Dixit starrer ‘Koyla’? Although her role was brief, Deepshika Nagpal stole the show with a very nuanced performance as Bindiya, the secretary to Raja Choudhary, a tyrannical zamindar. Although she is in a relationship with her employer, she has eyes for Shankar, Raja’s employee who is handsome but mute.

In an interview with SCREEN, Deepshika opened up about her experience of working with Shah Rukh Khan in the Rakesh Roshan directorial.

She revealed that her first scene she shot was the one where she dies in Shah Rukh Khan’s arms. She also recalled her first meeting with the superstar. He was busy smoking when Rakesh Roshan introduced her as “a very good actress.” The ‘Baazigar’ actor reacted nonchalantly at the remark and said, “Let’s see.”

Deepshika admitted she felt quite humiliated at that comment. “ Mere toh beizzati ho gayi,” she said. She then decided to take that throwaway remark as a challenge.

The death scene went smoothly, and while the director praised her and everybody clapped, she quietly walked away. She added that she did not interact much with Shah Rukh, as she was “very scared” of him.

Recalling her memories of working with the actor, she said he was a very quiet person who focused on his work. However, they did have some memorable moments when they shared the same umbrella when it was raining and he regaled her with stories of his boarding school.

Despite their initially awkward equation, SRK was impressed with her performance and recommended her name for another movie he was headlining, Badshaah. In the film, she essayed the role of a gangster’s moll.

Helmed by Rakesh Roshan, ‘Koyla’ is an action thriller film that depicted the blossoming love story between Shankar, a deaf and mute youth, and Gauri, an innocent village belle. Although Khan’s performance was praised by critics, ‘Koyla’ went on to be an average grosser at the box office. Made on a budget of Rs 12 crore, it earned just over Rs 28 crore.
