A 29-year-old woman was found murdered in her Bengaluru home, with her body dismembered and stored in a refrigerator. The incident was uncovered on Saturday when the victim’s family entered her house after being alerted by the building owner about a foul smell. The victim has been identified as H Mahalakshmi Das, an employee at a mall and a resident of Pipeline Road in Vyalikaval.

The discovery was made when Mahalakshmi’s mother and elder sister, along with the building owner Jayaram, opened her apartment door and found her decomposed body inside the refrigerator. Police were informed immediately.

Originally from Nepal, Mahalakshmi’s family had settled in Nelamangala. On Saturday, a neighbor notified Jayaram about the smell, prompting him to contact Mahalakshmi’s family. Upon entering the apartment, they found the front door bolted from outside, and insects were evident. The family opened the refrigerator, where they discovered the body and passed out from the shock.

Mahalakshmi had been living in the apartment for five months. She had previously separated from her husband, who lives in Nelamangala with their child. Police are investigating the possibility of multiple killers and believe the murder might have occurred around September 2, the day Mahalakshmi’s mobile phone was last active.

"It is surprising that none of her family members tried to contact her for so long. We will question them on this," an officer said. The police are examining call records for more clues.

The crime scene’s stench initially led some neighbours to believe it was from a dead animal. Police officers entered the scene wearing masks due to the strong odor. A neighbor, Susheela, mentioned that Mahalakshmi did not interact much with her neighbors and they were unaware she was married.

Some neighbors noticed a man regularly picking up and dropping Mahalakshmi from her work. Her cousin, Sunil, also stated that she did not interact much with him. Police suspect the killer was known to the victim, as valuables in her home were not taken, indicating the motive was not theft.
