New Delhi: A powerful dust storm swept through Delhi and surrounding regions on Friday (April 11) evening, bringing strong winds and a sudden shift in weather after days of intense heat. Parts of Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh were also affected as visibility dropped and winds stirred up dust and debris across the urban areas.
The storm disrupted flight operations and prompted an advisory from the weather department urging people to remain indoors.
Flights Delayed and Diverted Amid Strong Winds
The dust storm significantly impacted air traffic in and out of Delhi. According to reports, at least 15 flights were diverted due to the inclement weather. Several others experienced delays, affecting the schedules of thousands of passengers. Airlines including Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet issued statements warning of potential delays and diversions.

Air India confirmed that some of its flights were either delayed or rerouted due to the thunderstorm, while IndiGo and SpiceJet also acknowledged that adverse weather conditions could affect their operations. Authorities at Indira Gandhi International Airport continued to monitor the situation closely as wind speeds remained high throughout the evening.

IMD Issues Safety Warning, Advises Caution
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a public advisory, warning that the strong winds could pose a threat to crops, temporary structures, and outdoor installations. Citizens were urged to avoid travel unless necessary.

"Do not take shelter under trees, do not lie on concrete floors and lean against concrete walls. Unplug electrical appliances. Immediately get out of water bodies," the advisory stated.
Visuals shared on social media captured the severity of the storm, with dust enveloping cars, roads, and buildings.
