Tension flared at Old Trafford on Day 4 of the fourth Test between India and England when Indian captain Shubman Gill was struck painfully on the gloves by a sharp delivery from Jofra Archer. The incident occurred during India’s second innings as they attempted to build a lead in what remains a tightly contested Test match.
Archer, known for his pace and bounce, delivered a nasty back-of-a-length ball around the middle stump. The delivery nipped back in off the seam and kicked up sharply from the pitch, catching Gill by surprise. Attempting to defend, the Indian skipper was squared up, and in an awkward position, he failed to fully control the bat’s angle. The ball climbed unexpectedly, struck him on the right hand, and appeared to make direct contact with his gloves and fingers.

Gill immediately looked uncomfortable and removed his gloves, revealing visible signs of pain. Notably, there was strapping already present on his right thumb, indicating a pre-existing concern in that area. The physio was called onto the field without delay, and play was halted while Gill received medical attention.
While the extent of the injury is yet to be confirmed, the Indian camp will be deeply concerned, given Gill’s key role at the top of the order and his leadership as captain. With the series still in the balance, India will be hoping the blow is not serious enough to impact his availability for the rest of the match or the remainder of the tour.
