Mumbai–Pune–Hyderabad High-Speed Rail Project: NHSRCL Proposes Faster, Affordable, Premium Railway Link Between Maharashtra & Telangana

Mumbai: The Mumbai-Hyderabad High-Speed Rail (MHHSR) project is progressing steadily as part of a significant effort to enhance regional connectivity and modernize long-distance travel in southern and western India. According to Times Now, this ambitious endeavor will span 767 kilometers, connecting major cities such as Mumbai, Pune, and Hyderabad, and featuring 11 strategically placed stations across Maharashtra and Telangana.

The MHHSR is the fifth in a series of six new high-speed rail corridors introduced by the Indian government in 2019. While construction has not yet begun, groundwork tendering started in October 2020.

The Infra News India page on X indicated that the project the DPR for this high-speed rail initiative has been presented by NHSRCL to the Ministry of Railways. At present, none of the high-speed rail corridors are under construction, but the MHHSR route remains a feasible project in the planning stages.

The Mumbai-Hyderabad High-Speed Rail will employ advanced technology, ensuring exceptional speed, safety, and efficiency. Key attributes include a maximum speed of 350 km/h, operational speed of 320 km/h, and average speed of 250 km/h. It features a standard gauge of 1435 mm, a digital signalling system (DS-ATC), 25 kV AC overhead traction, and a passenger capacity of around 750 per train. Notably, it includes the Urgent Earthquake Detection and Alarm System (UrEDAS) for enhanced safety.

Route And Stations

The objective of the Mumbai-Hyderabad High-Speed Rail Project is to create a 767 km rail corridor that will feature a combination of elevated, underground, and at-grade tracks, thus linking vital urban and semi-urban areas. The plan includes 11 stations along the route, with proposed alignments near major expressways, national highways, and new corridors, potentially beginning close to Thane. Proposed stations include Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Lonavala, Pune, Kurkumb, Akluj, Pandharpur, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Zaheerabad, and Hyderabad. Additionally, the project may interface with the ongoing Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail initiative at Package C3.

Affordable Yet Premium

Although official ticket fares are yet to be determined, initial estimates suggest that ticket prices might be roughly 1.5 times higher than the current first-class AC fares provided by Indian Railways. As the project approaches its completion, more accurate fare information is anticipated to be revealed.
