Chaturdashi Tithi begins at 1:51 pm on October 19 and ends at 3:44 pm on October 20. Since Choti Diwali puja is performed at night, Choti Diwali will be celebrated on October 19, 2025, and Lakshmi Puja will be performed the following day, October 20.
What do you do on Choti Diwali?
- On this day, a lamp should be lit towards the south.
- On Naraka Chaturdashi, sesame seeds, jaggery, oil and sweets should be offered to Lord Yama and the ancestors.
- On the day of Choti Diwali, you can donate oil, lamps, sesame seeds, sweets, clothes or food to the poor.
- Broom is also worshipped on Chhoti Diwali.
- At night, when we go to sleep, a lamp is lit in every corner of the house to keep negative energy away.
Significance of Narak Chaturdashi
Narak Chaturdashi, or Choti Diwali, is also celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti in North India. It is believed that Hanuman was born from the womb of Anjana at midnight on this day. There are many legends associated with Choti Diwali. According to one legend, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura on this day. This day is celebrated in various ways across India.

- According to Hindu belief, lighting a four-sided lamp at the main entrance of the house at night on Naraka Chaturdashi liberates one from hell.
- In rural areas of India, this day is celebrated as a harvest festival.
- In some parts of India, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on this day, and special offerings of rice, jaggery, ghee, sesame seeds, and coconut are made to him.
- In West Bengal, this day is called Bhoot Chaturdashi, where people believe that the souls of ancestors come to earth on this day.
- In Tamil Nadu, on this day people observe a fast called "Nombu" and worship Goddess Lakshmi.
