Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois breaks boxing rule minutes before fight

Send Push

The bout between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois broke a rule before things even got underway.

Daniel Dubois walked to the ring first ahead of his fight with Anthony Joshua despite being the world champion. Dubois was defending his world title for the first time after being upgraded from interim champion following Oleksandr Usyk's decision to vacate his IBF belt.

Boxing etiquette dictates the champion walks to the ring second but it was Dubois who was announced first by Michael Buffer, with Joshua following shortly afterwards.

A record 96,000 fans crammed into Wembley to watch the British heavyweights following Liam Gallagher who performed three Oasis classics before the main event. On the undercard, Josh Padley caused an upset in the opening fight of the night, ruining Mark Chamberlain's well-laid world title plans by dropping the favourite en-route to a points win.

Josh Kelly survived a final-round onslaught from Ishmael Davis to eek out a narrow majority-decision win before Anthony Cacace outpointed Josh Warrington. Joshua Buatsi dropped Willy Hutchinson twice as he was given the nod on points before Hamzah Sheeraz stopped Tyler Denny in the second round to be crowned European champion.

Conor McGregor, one of the big names in attendance at Wembley, anticipated a "Good close fight" between Dubois and Joshua. "Dubois seems very relaxed. No pressure on him, all pressure is on AJ," he said.

"AJ is on top form. I'm here for the big stadium show. Here to support Turki [Alalshikh]. In the combat sport space, it's only the UK that executes the stadiums well. I'm excited to see it unfold. Maybe push on for a stadium show myself some time. It's a big operation. I'm excited."
