Drivers risk £2,500 fine for breaking one Highway Code rule during wet weather

That's it, summer is nearly over as a long-range UK forecast shows Brits could face storms and hail next month. Met Office experts believe the country is set for "unsettled weather conditions" with longer spells of rain expected to impact the majority of the UK.

That said, motorists should be very careful when driving in such wet and windy weather conditions as they could break the Highway Code with their careless behaviour behind the wheel. But it's not just driving without due care or attention as drivers must be wary of their tyres which should be within a certain range.

Over on TikTok, one driving instructor account, which boasts 338,000 followers, recently shared a number of rules to follow when the weather isn't so pleasant.

Listing a number of regulations to follow behind the wheel, people must remember to switch on their headlines and ventilate the car as rain causes humidity levels to increase.

People should also remember to brake soon and lighter than usual, as well as avoid cruise control. Another thing which can be overlooked is checking your tyre thread.

In the caption, the account revealed: "Check the thread of your vehicle tyres.

"Smooth or worn out tyres can severely reduce traction on wet roadways. Check your tyres for inflation levels and the proper tyre thread depth."

The Highway Code states driving with illegal tyres in the UK can result in a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. Each tread depth must be below the 1.6mm legal limit.

While the legal requirement is 1.6mm, experts recommend changing tyres at 3mm for safety reasons, as stopping distances increase dramatically below this depth.

For motorcycles, large vehicles, and passenger-carrying vehicles, these must have a minimum tread depth of 1mm.

You can check your wheels by looking for the tread depth indicators within the tyre's grooves; if the tread is level with these indicators, the tyre is at or below the legal limit.

Although drivers could be slapped with a fine of up to £2,500, in severe cases, it can end up costing £10,000 with a fine in court and potentially losing their licence.

The tyre tread disperses water from the road surface, causing a loss of grip in wet weather. Worn tyres could also increase stopping distances and reduce overall control.

It's also important to remember tyres are even considered illegal if they are under or over-inflated. If you're wary of anything about your car, you can always read the manual or visit your local garage for advice.

And finally, the TikTok video advised motorists to stay calm if their car starts to skid on wet tarmac. Slowing down and maintaining a safe distance between the car in front is also advised.
