Leeds tower block horror as pregnant woman plummets 17 storeys and newborn baby fighting for life

A newborn baby is fighting for its life after a heavily pregnant mum fell 17 storeys to her death from a tower block in Leeds.

Paramedics said the woman, who was "in the late stage of " fell from the building in Burmantofts on Wednesday, with police rushing to the scene following the morning incident. Yorkshire Ambulance Service called to Shakespeare Towers, in Shakespeare Approach, at around 10.24am.

Paramedics worked to save the expectant mum, identified as a woman in her 30s, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her child was delivered alive at hospital, where it is now fighting for its life while receiving "critical care".

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire police confirmed in a statement that the woman had "fallen from a height" and added that there were "no suspicious circumstances". They said: "At 10.24am today, police were contacted by the ambulance service who had been called to an incident where a woman had fallen from height. The woman died at the scene as result of her injuries.

"There were no suspicious circumstances and the Coroner’s Office has been informed. The woman, aged in her thirties, was in the late stage of pregnancy and her baby was delivered at hospital after the incident and is receiving critical care."

One resident speaking to the said he had been in his flat on the 14th floor of the building when he heard a "thud" and screaming, with pictures showing police cars and a cordon at Shakespeare Towers. The resident said: "It's a shock to everybody, to the whole community."

Some people have started paying tribute to the woman and the newborn child on social media, with one woman saying in a post on that she was "always a beautiful soul". She wrote: "Rest in peace you beautiful lady. I cannot believe I'm actually writing this. Always a beautiful soul in and out...Thinking of your children at home and praying for your baby girl in hospital will be okay."
