Man Utd's embarrassing stat after Tottenham defeat is Premier League's worst

Send Push

Manchester United turned in the WORST passing statistics in the Premier League during Sunday’s heavy defeat by Tottenham.

The Red Devils slumped to a miserable 3-0 defeat to the North London side at the weekend. Brennan Johnson opened the scoring for Spurs within the opening few minutes.

United’s misery was made even worse after Bruno Fernandes’ red card before Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke netted in the second-half to round off the rout. And it appears that the Red Devils broke a Premier League record for the campaign during the first-half.

United’s first-half passing accuracy was a miserable 77.3 per cent, which is the lowest across the entire league across first-halves this season. Under-fire boss Erik ten Hag was also left criticising his side’s display before the break.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Dutchman said: "It was clear we started the game very poor. After we concede the goal like we did in the third minute, and you are actually outnumbering [the opposition], and then concede a goal from a counter-attack where a centre-half is crossing the whole pitch and then bring, on the goalline, a cross in and then on the back post tapping in.

“That was our game plan; we should protect that area very good in your best defence in the defensive transition, because we knew the strength and from that point on, we are very stressful in the game and in possession, we didn’t find the spare man in the switch, bad decision-making, we couldn’t keep the ball, not aggressive enough or to play around with third-man actions, too many ball losses and also we didn’t get the press right.

“First 20 minutes was no good but we were still alive and we also had our chances with Zirkzee, with Garnacho hitting the post, then you can always come back. But then the red card, then we are downsized and it also has a big impact in the game."

The Red Devils’ passing statistics will not be the only worry. After back-to-back 3-0 defeats at home to Liverpool and Tottenham, it means that both Premier League rivals have scored more league goals than United at Old Trafford this season.

The Red Devils will certainly be aiming for improvement across what promises to be a big week for Ten Hag and the side. They take on Porto in the Europa League in midweek ahead of a trip to Aston Villa at the weekend.

Ten Hag is expected to be in charge for those games, with the club hierarchy determined to support him. But more adverse results could see the pressure rise again.
