Apple is gearing up to challenge ChatGPT with an all-new AI-powered search assistant aimed at transforming the way iPhone users access information. Behind the scenes, a specialized team called "Answers, Knowledge and Information" (AKI) is building a stripped-down, conversational AI that can answer complex questions and provide real-time, web-based responses—directly rivaling ChatGPT and similar chatbots.
This strategic pivot marks a significant upgrade from Apple’s existing AI features, which include Siri, Apple Intelligence, and creative tools like GenMoji. While Apple previously downplayed the need for chatbot-style AI, growing competition and user expectations have prompted the tech giant to accelerate its AI ambitions.
The move comes ahead of the highly anticipated iPhone 17 launch, with reports confirming real-world testing of the new AI search on prototype devices. Despite facing challenges in retaining AI talent, Apple remains determined to innovate and close the gap in conversational AI.
If successful, Apple’s AI search could redefine how users interact with their devices, combining Siri’s functionality with advanced, chat-based intelligence—potentially ending ChatGPT’s dominance and setting a new benchmark for smart search experiences on mobile platforms.
