With the arrival of monsoon 16 days before time in Maharashtra's capital Mumbai, the 107-year record of highest rainfall in May was broken. Local train services on the Harbour Line of Central Railway were disrupted due to heavy rains and thousands of people were stranded here and there due to waterlogging on roads in many areas. At the same time, the Meteorological Department has predicted rain and strong winds for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, UP, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Maharashtra even today.
No hope of relief even today
The Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert for heavy rains in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts, which was changed to a red alert on Monday morning. A red alert for heavy rains has also been issued for Tuesday in these districts.
Reached Rayalaseema and most parts of the Northeast
The southwest monsoon reached the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh on Monday. It is likely to reach other areas of Andhra in a day or two. According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon has reached Telangana, the remaining parts of Mizoram, the entire Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and parts of Assam and Meghalaya ahead of time. In the next three days, it will cover the rest of Maharashtra and the entire Northeast.
The temperature will drop in Northwest India.
Most areas of Northwest India, including UP, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh, did not experience much heat on Monday. According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature in Northwest India may drop by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius during the next 24 hours. After that, the mercury is expected to rise by 3 to 4 degrees in four to five days.
There are also chances of hailstorms along with thunderstorms and rain.
From May 27 to June 1, thunderstorms, rains, and winds may blow at a speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, UP, Rajasthan. There may be hailstorms in Himachal Pradesh for the next two days.
Devastation in Maharashtra, 13 NDRF and two SDRF teams deployed
Services on Aqualine had to be stopped due to waterlogging at the newly built underground metro station in Worli. More than 250 flights are also reported to be affected. Apart from Mumbai, rain also caused a lot of devastation in Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts. 13 NDRF and two SDRF teams have been deployed to control the situation worsened by rain in Maharashtra. Five NDRF teams were engaged in relief and rescue work for people stranded in Mumbai on Monday. NDRF also took charge in Satara, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, Sangli and Solapur. In a viral video, water is seen leaking along the escalator inside the underground metro station premises and the false ceiling has also collapsed. Metro Line 3 is Mumbai's first completely underground metro line and is still under construction. The tracks were submerged at Masjid, Byculla, Dadar, Matunga, and Badlapur railway stations of Central Railway, due to which local trains were crawling.
Monsoon reached Mumbai so early for the first time in 75 years
IMD scientist Sushma Nair said the southwest monsoon knocked in Mumbai on Monday. For the first time in the last 75 years, monsoon has reached Mumbai so early. In 1956, the Southwest Monsoon reached Mumbai on 29 May. It also reached on the same day in 1962 and 1971.
Two dead in Latur
Two people died and six others were injured due to lightning in Latur district of Maharashtra on Monday evening. This incident happened in Ahmedpur tehsil when some people were working in the field.
Karnataka: Condition worsened, red alert for five days
Normal life in Dakshina Kannada district was badly affected due to heavy monsoon rains for the third consecutive day in the coastal area of Karnataka, after which the NDRF team has been deployed. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the next five days in coastal Karnataka.
