Cyclone Dana: Odisha Begins Restoration and Relief Efforts in Bhadrak

Bhadrak, Odisha: Following Cyclone Dana’s landfall along the Odisha coast early Friday, restoration and relief efforts have commenced in the impacted areas. In Bhadrak, an NDRF team worked to clear uprooted trees across several villages in Dhamara, where coastal communities witnessed turbulent seas, strong winds, and heavy rainfall from the cyclone’s effects.

Shantanu Mohanty, Additional District Magistrate of Bhadrak, said, “We have already evacuated vulnerable individuals to cyclone shelters. Electricity and other essential services have been restored. Fire Services, ODRF, and NDRF teams are on the ground. A red alert is in effect due to expected heavy rainfall, and residents have been advised to remain indoors.”

The weather department projected that Cyclone Dana would weaken into a cyclonic storm by Friday afternoon.

In Bhubaneswar, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reviewed the cyclone's landfall response, accompanied by the state’s revenue and disaster management minister, Suresh Pujari, and Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja. “Cyclone Dana made landfall between the Bhitarkanika and Dhamra coasts early on October 25, completing its passage by 7:00 a.m. With careful planning, we achieved our target of ‘zero casualty,’ relocating nearly 600,000 people to safe zones, including 6,000 pregnant women transferred to health centers,” the Chief Minister said.

Flight operations at Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik International Airport, suspended from 5:00 p.m. on October 24, resumed by 8:00 a.m. on Friday. Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport also reopened for flights at 8:00 a.m. after a temporary halt.

Meanwhile, bus services at Bhubaneswar's Baramunda Bus Terminal were disrupted, and high tidal waves hit Old Digha Beach in Purba Medinipur. Parts of Howrah also reported light rainfall as Cyclone Dana completed its landfall.
