The football world is in mourning after Las Palmas announced the tragic death of their 23-year-old defender Zeben Ramos. The promising young player had been left in a coma following a horror car crash on June 9 and has now sadly passed away.
Las Palmas released a statement on the tragic news: "UD Las Palmas deeply regret having to announce the passing of Zebensui Ramos Gonzalez, known in football as Zeben.
"The Las Palmas C team player, aged 23, was unable to overcome the severe injuries he sustained in a tragic collision on June 9 at Arucas on Gran Canaria.
"A versatile left-sided defender with great prospects, Zeben stood out due to his commitment, character and ability to adapt to various defensive roles.
"His non-stop hard work and his attitude on and off the pitch earned him the chance to repeatedly train with [reserve team] Las Palmas Atletico.
"We wish to convey our deepest condolences to his family, friends and teammates, and to everyone who accompanied him during his football career. The entire Yellows family unites in grief at Zeben's loss. He will forever remain in our hearts."
The club observed a minute's silence before Friday's training session following his death. Ramos had joined the Gran Canarian outfit in January 2024 and featured for their reserve team.
A flood of tributes poured in from fellow Spanish sides after the devastating news. Sevilla paid their respects, saying: "Sevilla Futbol Club expresses its condolences for the passing of Zeben Ramos to all his family and loved ones, as well as to UD Las Palmas. Rest in peace."
Celta Vigo sent their condolences to Las Palmas, the fans, and Zeben's loved ones, saying: "From RC Celta, we wish to express our deepest condolences to @UDLP_Oficial, their fans, and the family and loved ones of Zeben Ramos. Much strength in these difficult times. Rest in peace, Zeben."
Espanyol added: "From RCD Espanyol, we wish to express our deepest condolences to all the family and colleagues of Zeben Ramos, as well as to UD Las Palmas. RIP."
Las Palmas, recently relegated to Spain's second tier, earned promotion back to La Liga in 2023 after a five-year absence, but unfortunately finished nine points shy of safety, securing only eight victories throughout the season.
