Manchester United, languishing in 15th place in the Premier League after a staggering 16 defeats, are enduring one of their worst-ever seasons. Ruben Amorim has been honest in accepting that unwanted status previously, and he didn't hold back from doubling down on Wednesday, despite sitting alongside one of his players.
Amorim didn't mince words when he acknowledged the dire situation, but reminded the media that it's a campaign that could ultimately end in silverware. "In that moment - and if you look at the Premier League since I arrived - we are the worst team in terms of results," the Portuguese tactician explained.
"At the end of this season, we can be the worst United team in Premier League history - one with a European title. But that will change nothing.
"We know that this season was really disappointing for everybody, so nothing is going to change that.
"This season was the worst one - I don't know if in history - but, for sure, in the last 50 years."
United face a tense Europa League semi-final second against Athletic Club on Thursday, despite a 3-0 advantage from the first leg in Bilbao.
Amorim remains wary, especially given United's tendency to concede freely at Old Trafford on several occasions this season.
He said: "Yeah, it's hard to say [what United is going to turn up]. Sometimes, it's not what kind of team we will be tomorrow.
"If you look at our team, we cannot say today what is going to happen. There are some teams in any league that can understand that the game is going to be like this.
"Things can change a little bit, but the story is going to be like this, and we can control the narrative of the game. We cannot do that.
"So we have to face the game as just one more game. I feel that we need to score to go to the next round, so that's clearly the way we are going to face the game.
"Against Brentford, we were near to getting the draw, but we suffered a goal and suffered another goal, quite fast. That can happen.
"That has happened four times here, so we know we will have to suffer a little bit to go to the final, and we are ready to suffer, and we need to be better at the small details in this game."
