long-lost daughter said she was "so sorry" as she wrote a heartbreaking letter to the legendary actor.

The star was left stunned when he received a letter from Abi Harris saying she thought he might be her father. In the letter Abi says she had "wrestled with the unsettling discovery that my paternity is uncertain".

The 53-year-old explained she didn't want to "betray" her late father or want her mother Jennifer Hill to "feel guilty" about the uncertainty. However she wanted to learn who her biological father was.

It led Abi to ask whether would be willing to take an anonymous paternity test. She explained: "For considerable time, I have wrestled with the unsettling discovery that my paternity is uncertain.

"I don't want my mum to feel guilty. I didn't want to 'betray' my late father and I have worried endlessly about how on earth to approach you. However, I would really like to know."

She added: "Please would you agree to take an anonymous paternity test so that I can finally know the truth and let the matter rest. Obviously, this remains entirely between you and me.

"I'm sorry if this sounds rather abrupt but I am trying desperately hard not to waffle."

Sir David, 84, says it was the "most astonishing" letter he had ever received. He says he was briefly with Abi's mum while filming Under Milk Wood in 1973.

The test revealed Sir David was Abi's biological father. It left him to break the news of his new daughter and her son Charlie to his wife Lady Gill White and daughter Sophie.

However, Sir David says the family welcomed the pair with open arms. Speaking to The Mirror in 2023, he said: "My wife, Gill, and daughter, Sophie, have been very supportive and understanding and have embraced Abi and welcomed her and her young son into her now wider family."

Abi first began suspecting the actor was her father after hearing about the time he spent with her mother and realising they have the same shaped nose. Sir David added: "To say it was a surprise to find out I had a daughter from years ago is an understatement.

"However, on settling with the news, I am delighted that I am now able to get to know Abi and so we meet up when we can."

Abi, who is also an actor, now visits Sir David at his home in Ellesborough, Buckinghamshire. He is even said to take Charlie into his beloved workshop where they dive into the world of model rockets.
