Spaghetti bolognese will taste much better with a burst of flavours when just one extra ingredient is added to it. Spaghetti bolognese is one of the most popular dinner-time meals for Brits, being something that busy workers and parents can throw together with cheap ingredients. But there is a secret trick to improving the flavours in your spaghetti bolognese that one cook has shared and it's an ingredient we never think of adding to this .
It's typically made up of onions, garlic, tomatoes and ground beef, all cooked and served over the pasta. But with such a popular dish, there are many ways to cook it and one chef's method had us intrigued as she introduces an ingredient that we have never thought to add to our spaghetti bolognese. Nicky Corbishley's spaghetti bolognese only takes 30 minutes to make and incorporates a range of ingredients that work together to create a dish that "totally hits the spot".
Corbishley's secret ingredient to an amazing-tasting spaghetto bolognese is Worcestershire sauce, a condiment and cooking ingredient typically used in classic British dishes. However, it seems as though it can add a great deal of excitement to your midweek spaghetti bolognese.
The chef shared on Kitchen Sanctuary and listed the ingredients needed. She uses:
1 tbsp olive oil
1 finely chopped onion
2 minced cloves of
1 peeled and finely diced carrot
3 finely diced chestnut mushrooms
450g or 400g minced beef
120 ml (1/2 cup) red wine
3 tbsp tomato puree
1 tsp dried oregano
½ tsp dried thyme
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 beef stock cube crumbled
2 400g tins finely chopped tomatoes
½ tbsp light brown sugar
½ tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
300g dried spaghetti or fresh pasta
Firstly, she heats the oil on the pan and then cooks the onions for five minutes. Then, the garlic is added and cooked for a further minute.
Then, she goes in with the carrot and mushrooms and cooks them with the garlic and onions for between two and three minutes. After that, it's time to add the ground beef and cook for five or six minutes.
Add the wine and bring it to a boil for two to three minutes, letting it reduce by a third. Then, add the tomato puree, oregano, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, beef stock cube, tinned tomatoes, brown sugar, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil and turn down the heat and let it simmer for between 15 and 20 minutes.
You can simultaneously boil your pasta in salted water for between 12 and 15 minutes, cooking it until it's al dente. Then, it's time to serve the spaghetti in bowls and spoon the bolognese on top.
Worcestershire Sauce is a popular sauce in the UK. It was originally invented by pharmacists John Wheeley Lea and William Henry Perrins in the city of Worcester in Worcestershire during the first half of the 19th century.
Since then, people have used it on burgers and steaks and when cooking dishes like shepherd's pie and beef stews.
