The new £1.4 bn tunnel that's to become its country's longest

Major construction projects are underway to improve travel and free Mumbai in of its famous bottlenecks.

A new road and tunnel stretch will help shorten journeys for travellers between the region of Thane and Borivili.

The Mumbai area will be home to this new tunnel which will stretch a total of 6.3 miles (10.25 km) with a further 0.99 miles (1.6 km) of linking roads.

Once completed, the project will be hailed as India's longest tunnel and will include three lanes in either direction.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is managing this colossal project with the aim to help lower journey times between Thane and Borivili.

The Thane - Borivali tunnel project will be constructed by Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd. and features road tunnels under Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), with a combined 1-kilometre of approach roads on both ends.

Prime Minister laid the project's foundation on July 13 with future plans for the project's tunnels to have three lanes being built using four mega tunnel boring machines (TBMs), which will be supplied by Herrenknecht.

The tunnel will be at a maximum depth of 23m below the surface and will connect Magathane's Ekta Nagar in Borivali and Tikuji-Ni-Wadi at Manpada in Thane.

The tunnel will reduce travelling time between both spots from one to two hours to roughly 15 minutes.

Mumbai is already home to some impressive projects, including the four-km twin tunnels which are planned at a depth of 40 metres below mangrove patches, rivers and creeks, and aim to connect Mindspace in Malad with Charkop Gaon, Kandivali, in the western suburbs of Mumbai.

Abhijit Bangar, additional municipal commissioner overseeing this project, told the : "The northern and southern end of the tunnels originate from Charkop and Mindspace (Malad), the two tunnels will run parallel to each other and will be part of the packages C and D of the phase two of MCRP, which is divided into six packages.

"Considering the tunnels will pass below mangrove patches, rivers and creeks, we can say that this will be Mumbai's first vehicular tunnels that will pass underneath water bodies.

"Earlier, it was proposed that the twin tunnels of the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) would pass below the Vihar and Tulsi lakes of Mumbai, however, their alignment was later changed."

Elsewhere, a new Kashmir rail bridge is set to be a game-changer for India.

The bridge will be the world's highest single-arch rail bridge and is set to connect the region of Kashmir with the rest of the country for the first time ever.

The bridge over the River Chenab in the Reasi district of Jammu took more than 20 years to finish.

This impressive infrastructure project sits 35 metres taller than the , with the first train set to run between Bakkal and Kauri areas.

Infrastructure experts have stated this new railway line will give India a strategic advantage along the troubled border region, being a flashpoint between the country and .
