The thriving seaside city built on the edge of the desert and loved by British tourists

The desert resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt suffered a reduction in British footfall due to the Covid pandemic. However, 2022 saw a dramatic uptick in UK visitors to the city.

Its popularity with British tourists stems from its access to the still waters of the Red Sea, stunning beaches, and fantastic year-round warm weather.

Nicknamed Sharm, the Egyptian city sits on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula.

The resort is popular with families, especially with young children, as it is widely considered to be safe and has plenty of amenities for kids to enjoy.

Tourists often visit the Ras Mohammed National Park, which is home to some of the world's most incredible diving sites.

Naama Bay boasts white sandy beaches and is backed by a pedestrian-only promenade, making the beach the perfect spot for a family day out.

Tourists can also learn more about the region's history on a day trip to Saint Catherine's Monastery, one of the world's oldest working monasteries.

Despite only having a population of less than 100,000, British tourists totaled 267,000 in 2022, according to Statista.

As well as the range of activities available, the history on show, and the views of the Red Sea Sharm offers, tourists are also drawn to the resort thanks to the weather.

During the summer months, the top temperature can climb above 40C, but if that's too hot the mercury is still in the mid-20s in the middle of January and February.
