Residents in a sleepy Kent town are scared to go outside because of antisocial teenagers intimidating and violently assaulting them. People living and working in Snodland have been forced to call the police as local youths have spat at them when they're out and about.
Kent Police say they are aware of the challenges plaguing the town, but insisted reports of problems have dropped in recent months. However, locals claim the issues are getting worse. One resident, Nick Watt, said a group of youths had blocked him on the High Street when he was with his nine-year-old daughter.
Nick told Kent Online that the youngsters told him to "get lost and go around." To avoid further confrontation, he claimed, he and his daughter had no choice but to step onto the busy road. "I didn't like that my daughter had to walk on a busy street. I told them that. I told them it wasn't right", he said.
The youths then proceeded to follow Nick and his daughter, before one of them spat multiple times in their direction, and another asked the father if he'd like to be "slashed with a knife" in front of his daughter. Once home, he reported the incident to the police online, and inquiries were carried out. The case is now reportedly closed.
Business owners in the town are also having to take extra care to protect their property and staff from violent teenagers.
Every weekend, staff at pizza takeaway chain Domino's only permit one customer inside at a time. The customer must use the doorbell outside the locked door to stop teenagers from getting in and causing carnage.
A staff member said: "The kids would come in, throw food and wrappers around, and leave rubbish behind. We had to throw away our products because we couldn't risk contamination."
On one occasion, the group even broke a window, the staffer said. "We have to be careful not to let them in. One of our drivers was hurt. They would touch his bike, kick him and hit his helmet."
