Makhachkala police responded to shooting reports in the Dagestan region's capital on Tuesday. Videos of a large police presence in the area surfaced on social media. Officers were said to have blocked the central part of the city. Residents were asked to stay at home. Local media outlets reported that two people exchanged fire with police officers.

However, Russia's RIA News agency soon cited local authorities to report that the security measures in central Makhachkala will remain increased, but the situation is "calm.""Several police squads were immediately sent to the scene, and the area was cordoned off. A thorough inspection of the area was carried out. The information [about alleged gunmen] has not been confirmed. Everything is quiet," Dagestani police said, according to the report.Dagestan, a republic in southern Russia, is still grieving and holding funerals for the deceased as rumors and doubts abound about who carried out the gunman attack that left 20 people dead, the most of them police, and several more injured. As previously reported by Crisis 24 website, through late June, authorities in Dagestan Province, especially in the towns of Makhachkala and Derbent, are expected to maintain a heightened security posture. Following simultaneous strikes on many places in both cities on June 23 and 24, law enforcement officials launched extensive raids in Makhachkala and Derbent. Both cities' security forces are still on high alert; in particular, significant police contingents were sent in in response to rumors of an armed person in Makhachkala's University Square late on June 25.When reacting to possible security threats, authorities planned to use more stringent security measures, such roadblocks and security cordons. Any police operation will probably cause minor disturbances in some areas.
