Mumbai: A major tragedy was averted as a boat full of devotees capsized at Versova Chowpatty Beach in Mumbai during the immersion of a Ganesh idol. The boat carried members of the Andheri Cha Raja Ganpati pandal who had boarded the boat for the immersion. They had a narrow escape as the boat sank while they were immersing the idol.

The incident, which was captured on video, showed that as the boat flipped, some devotees managed to save themselves by swimming to nearby boats, while those unable to swim were rescued by neighboring boats. In the video, it was also observed that other devotees on nearby boats were helping to ensure everyone was saved from drowning. One devotee has been admitted to the hospital and is currently undergoing treatment. Hundreds of people staged a protest and gathered on road in large numbers against the BMC's decision to raze part of the Mehboob-E-Subhani mosque located on 90 Feet Road around 9 am."A team of BMC officials from G-North administrative ward reached the 90 Feet Road around 9 am to demolish the alleged illegal portion of Mehboob-E-Subhani masjid. Soon, residents gathered at the spot and stopped the civic officials from entering the lane where the mosque is located," an official said, quoted PTI. Agitating people assembled outside the Dharavi police station, squatting on the road. Meanwhile, the police said situation was under control. A delegation from the mosque, BMC officials and the Dharavi police held talks to resolve the issue.
