Kozhikode: Two policemen attached to the Perumbadappu police station in Malappuram were suspended while another officer was transferred for allegedly manhandling a CPM functionary's son and other DYFI workers following a skirmish at a temple festival at Eramangalam in Malappuram.

Senior civil police officer (CPO) San Soman and CPO U Umesh were suspended by Malappuram district police chief R Vishwanath pending investigation. CPO J Jojo has been transferred to Kottakkal.

The disciplinary action was taken based on a complaint that during the Eramangalam Puzhakkara temple festival on April 2, police officers from the Perumpadappu station manhandled the son of CPM Ponnani area committee member Suresh Kakkanath and assaulted the DYFI activists accompanying him.

CPM Ponnani area committee also alleged that after the assault, the DYFI activists were taken into police custody and beaten up and parents who went to the station to inquire were also assaulted.

The action was based on a report by Tirur DSP Moosa Vallikadan, following a protest by the CPM Malappuram district committee.
