Coimbatore: Two mobile phone snatchers were arrested following a chase near Variety Hall Road in the city on Monday evening. Police seized two stolen mobile phones and a motorcycle from them.
The arrested were identified as R Yuvaraja Boopathy, 30, and R Saddam Hussain, 25, both from Selvapuram in the city. Police said the two who are daily wagers were in the habit of robbing mobile phones, stealing two wheelers and threatening people visiting Tasmac shops at knifepoint to extort money.
Variety Hall Road police inspector Meenambigai and team were conducting a vehicle check at the Variety Hall Road – NH Road junction around 12.30 pm. The two accused who were on a motorcycle did not stop and drove away in a rash and negligent manner, prompting a police team to chase them.
"However, the two abandoned their motorcycle near CMC Colony at Variety Hall Road and attempted to jump a compound wall. But they fell and suffered fractures on their right hands," a police officer said.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that they had robbed two mobile phones from two people at Ponnaiahrajapuram and Edaiyar Street on March 21 and March 25 respectively. They had also stolen a motorcycle parked on the roadside at Ponnaiahrajapuram in the city.
Both were remanded in judicial custody on Monday night.
