Coimbatore: Open-end mills have decided to suspend grey yarn production for a day on Wednesday in solidarity with an indefinite strike by the Job-Working Powerloom Unit Weavers Association of Coimbatore and Tirupur.
The indefinite strike, which began on March 19 demanding a wage hike, continues unabated, impacting the textile industry.
The ongoing protest has disrupted business worth several crores of rupees. Open-end spinning mills are incurring financial losses due to the strike.
The striking powerloom weavers have announced that they will hold a hunger strike on Wednesday. In solidarity with their hunger strike, OE mills have decided to suspend grey yarn production on Wednesday.
Jayabal, president of the Recycle Textile Federation, said on Tuesday that the decision was made based on a consensus among federation members. He warned that if the weavers' strike continued indefinitely, OE mills might be forced to suspend production for an extended period.
He urged the district collector to intervene urgently to safeguard the region's textile industry and help find a resolution that would allow business operations to resume smoothly.
