Aamir Khan is all set to return to the silver screen with 'Sitaare Zameen Par', which has now been confirmed for a theatrical release on June 20, 2025. The announcement was made by Aamir Khan Productions on May 5, accompanied by the film’s first official poster. However, what makes this upcoming release stand out isn't just its theme or cast, but Aamir’s unconventional release strategy that could disrupt the OTT model Bollywood has widely embraced.

Aamir Khan plans to skip OTT and launch a pay-per-view model on YouTube

According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir Khan is planning to bypass traditional OTT platforms altogether. Instead, the actor is exploring a pay-per-view model on YouTube that would kick in two months after the theatrical release. A source close to the production stated that Aamir Khan’s goal is to retain the cinematic experience by discouraging audiences from waiting for streaming premieres. This explains the absence of any OTT branding on the film’s first poster.

A new approach to challenge the ‘OTT-Only’ tag for non-spectacle films

The source added that the model aims to counter the growing perception that non-spectacle films belong only on OTT. “Pay-per-view creates urgency and gives producers more control,” they said. Aamir Khan’s intention is to build a more consumer-driven model, where viewers consciously choose to pay for a film rather than consuming it passively through subscriptions. Whether this experimental move becomes a game-changer remains to be seen, but it has already sparked debate in the industry.

An Indian take on the Spanish film 'Campeones'

Meanwhile, 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is not just another Aamir film—it’s an Indian adaptation of the 2018 Spanish film 'Campeones'. Directed by RS Prasanna and co-starring Genelia Deshmukh, the film is a comedy drama focused on individuals with different abilities. In a recent viral interview, Aamir Khan confirmed the adaptation and said the story is about inclusion, friendship, and transformation.

A thematic sequel to 'Taare Zameen Par'

Interestingly, the actor revealed that the film is a thematic sequel to 'Taare Zameen Par' but with a twist. “That film made you cry, this one will make you laugh,” said Aamir Khan. He plays Gulshan, a brash, politically incorrect basketball coach whose journey with a diverse team teaches him what it means to be truly human.
