During the New York trials, a judge approved Harvey Weinstein’s request for a hospital stay. He was moved from Rikers Island to Bellevue Hospital’s medical ward, where he is expected to remain until next Thursday before his upcoming hearing. The Associated Press reported that this transfer was ordered late Thursday to ensure Weinstein receives essential medical care.
Weinstein’s Attorney Responds to Transfer Decision
Following the judge’s ruling, Harvey Weinstein’s attorney, Imran H. Ansari, told Variety that the producer is pleased with the decision to transfer him to the medical facilities at Bellevue Hospital in New York.
Criticism of Rikers Island Conditions
Ansari further stated that Rikers Island is unquestionably a deficient and dangerous prison. He added that Weinstein has suffered tremendously within its walls and that no person, regardless of their medical condition or what they are accused of, should be treated so inhumanely and without any regard for the protections of the Constitution.
Legal Team’s Request for Improved Medical Care
The judge’s decision followed a request from Weinstein’s legal team to move him to improved medical facilities, citing the poor and unhealthy conditions of his previous placement. They also reported that Weinstein had been experiencing unusual weight gain, raising concerns about his health.
Weinstein’s Health Issues and Treatment
Since his diagnosis in 2024, Weinstein has been receiving treatment for bone marrow cancer while in custody. He has also been treated at Bellevue Hospital for several other health issues, including leukemia, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and sleep apnea. In September, he underwent heart surgery as part of his ongoing medical care.
Court Dismisses Some Charges
Meanwhile, the court dismissed the producer’s sex crime charges, ruling that the case was compromised because it included statements from three accusers who were not officially involved in the lawsuit.
