The Pirates are going down, and to save the downfall, they fired manager Derek Shelton and gave the position to Don Kelly . Was it a good decision? It seems like Don Kelly is the new lucky charm for the team, as the Pirates have already won three matches after he took over the managerial role. However, it requires a team of experts to manage the players, and for that, the management has called upon Gene Lamont to become Kelly’s special advisor.
Gene Lamont is the new special advisor to manager Don KellyWas it easy bringing a 78-year-old baseball coach out from his retirement to help a new manager with the team? It might have been difficult for others, but not for Don Kelly. Both Kelly and Lamont go way back during coaching times, and when Kelly was announced as the manager, he immediately sought out Gene Lamont for help.
“I’m really excited about it. To bring in Gene Lamont as a mentor, not just for me, for the entire staff and the players,” Kelly said when asked about this shocking decision. He further went on to add,
“I’m just super pumped that he’s willing to come on board and willing to be here for us and the Pirates and the organization.”
Gene Lamont has previously coached the Leyland team in Pittsburgh, which makes this reunion all the more special. Lamont will reportedly join the team by next week and will adorn the jersey number 54. Should Don Kelly go ahead and ask Jim Leyland to join as well? If that happens, it would be a field day for all the Pirates fans.
Who else is joining the Pittsburgh Pirates staff?Apart from Gene Lamont, the AAA Indianapolis manager, Chris Truby will also join the Pittsburgh Pirates staff club as a Major League coach. Truby has been with the Pirates since 2022. He initially joined as an infield coordinator for the Minor League team and later went on to completely manage the team. Truby has joined the Pirates in Philadelphia, wearing the No. 44 jersey.
The third baseman coach, Mike Rabelo’s position has also been promoted to bench coach and will be seen helping Kelly in game planning and strategy. To fill Rabelo’s role in Indianapolis, the Pirates have appointed Shawn Bowman, who was previously given the role of assistant director.
