Google is facing a lawsuit from Mexico over its decision to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico . Claudia Sheinbaum , Mexico's President, confirmed the action, saying that “the lawsuit has already been filed," after the Alphabet-owned company changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" for users of its Google Maps service in the US. This legal action comes after US lawmakers passed legislation seeking to turn President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the water body into federal law. The proposed bill would mandate the name change for US federal agencies as well. Earlier, in February, Sheinbaum had cautioned Google that the country may pursue legal action against the company if it did not reverse its decision.
What Mexico president Claudia Sheinbaum said about the Google lawsuit
“All we want is for the decree issued by the US government to be complied with. The US government only calls the portion of the US continental shelf the Gulf of America, not the entire gulf, because it wouldn't have the authority to name the entire gulf,” Sheinbaum said in a staetmet to the news agency AFP.
Previously, the Mexican government argued that Trump’s executive order on the issue applies only to the segment of the continental shelf under US jurisdiction.
Responding to Trump’s comments, Sheinbaum proposed calling the US “Mexican America,” citing a map from before 1848, when the US seized one-third of Mexico’s territory.
The two neighboring countries are now engaged in talks to ease tensions stemming from Trump’s global trade war, which has included a series of tariffs targeting Mexico.
Trump’s proposal was backed by conservative Georgia representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and passed almost strictly along party lines while every Democrat voted against it. On the other hand, all but one Republican, Nebraska representative Don Bacon, supported the proposal.
