NEW DELHI: 'Tughlakian demonetisation, hastily implemented GST, unplanned Covid-19 lockdown, and rising imports from China,' were some of the reasons listed by Congress in its attack on Narendra Modi-led government over its inability to handle "mass" unemployment as it marks 100 days at Centre.
Citing "failing Modi economy" as the reason, the grand old party pointed out that only 21% of India's labour force had salaried jobs, which was lower than the pre-Covid era.
The statement came only hours after Union home minister Amit Shah listed out the success stories of the Modi 3.0.
"Yesterday marked a hundred days of this unstable, crisis-ridden Government - an anniversary characterised by yet another failure to act on India’s mass unemployment crisis. Our statement on the necessity for the Government to acknowledge the gravity of the crisis facing India's youth," Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.
Terming it a crisis of the government's "own making," Ramesh cited various reports including International Labour Organisation (ILO's) India Employment Report, 2024, which points out that there have been zero growth in employment between 2012 and 2019.
"The non-biological PM and his drumbeating economists have consistently attacked the idea of jobless growth. The reality of what we have seen since 2014 is perhaps even more stark – job-loss growth," Ramesh said.
Continuing with the "non-biological" rhetoric, Ramesh said, "The misfortune of India is that the non-biological PM and his government are refusing to accept this reality and are instead claiming a booming job market. The self-appointed divinity himself has chimed in with the claim that the economy created 80 million jobs, using RBI KLEMS data."
Earlier today, Amit Shah had applauded his government at the Centre for starting projects worth Rs 15 lakh crore after in the first 100 days of assuming power.
