AICTE launches 1M1B green internship programme to promote sustainability in education

NEW DELHI: All India Council for Technical Education ( AICTE ) in partnership with 1M1B Green Skills Academy, an UN-accredited non-profit will provide for one lakh Green Internships by 2030 aimed at nurturing climate talent . 10,000 Green Internships to be given in the year 2024-2025. A core feature of the internship will involve hands-on learning, data analysis, and gamified assessments in areas such as energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, waste management, and carbon footprint reduction.

The 1M1B Green Skills Academy was announced at the UN headquarters in December 2023. Earlier this year, 1M1B started India’s 1st Green Skill Academy-Developing climate talent leveraging AI in partnership with Telangana government and Salesforce, followed by another MoU with the Meghalaya government.

With the International Labour Organization (ILO) projecting 24 million new jobs in the green economy by 2030, and the renewable energy sector alone expected to create over 38 million jobs globally, this initiative positions India’s youth at the forefront of emerging opportunities in sustainability .

The programme, aimed at fostering eco-consciousness and sustainability, was launched at the AICTE headquarters on Friday, in the presence of T G Sitharam, chairperson, AICTE, Anil Sahasrabuddhe, chairperson, National Educational Technology Forum, Buddha Chandrasekhar, CCO of AICTE, Yudhisther Yadav from Salesforce India, and Manav Subodh, founder and chief mentor of 1M1B.

Under this programme interns will engage in live projects to transform their educational campuses into green campuses. They will conduct audits, develop energy-saving strategies, design zero-waste systems, and gain expertise in helping institutions meet NetZero goals . The programme aligns with the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) standards, which promote sustainability in educational settings. Interns will also receive mentorship from industry leaders to develop a sustainability mindset and proficiency in data-driven climate action.

Sitharam said: “This programme is a key step towards fostering eco-consciousness and equipping students with practical skills in sustainability. It aligns with our vision of integrating green practices into education and ensures our future workforce is ready to meet global sustainability challenges.”

Aspirants can apply for the internships via the AICTE portal, and those who complete the programme will receive certifications, with top performers earning special recognition and awards.

Subodh said: “The programme provides young people a platform to explore new career opportunities in the green economy. It’s a programme to identify and groom the climate talent of our country.”
