NEW DELHI: BJP leader Rahul Sinha on Saturday defended fellow party member Dilip Ghosh’s recent marriage to colleague Rinku Majumdar, saying the matter was entirely personal and should not be a cause for public scrutiny.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Sinha said, “This is his personal matter… There is no reason for other people to take so much of a headache. ‘Jab miya biwi raazi to kya karega kazi?’”
Speaking further, he dismissed criticism regarding Ghosh’s age, saying, “So what if he is older in age? Don’t people of his age get married?”
Sinha added that Ghosh had taken a personal decision based on his own feelings. “He felt that he should get married, and he also met a woman of his choice… No one else has the right to say anything about this,” he said, further stating that Ghosh deliberately kept the wedding low-key, avoiding a large gathering. “He didn’t want to create too much noise around this, so he did not talk much about this matter. That is why he did not invite many people. Many people close to him, like people from his family, were also not in attendance,” Sinha said.
On Friday, former West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh, 60, tied the knot with Rinku Majumdar in a quiet ceremony. Dressed in traditional Bengali attire, Ghosh thanked supporters and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee for her wishes. “My personal life will have no bearing on my political career,” he told reporters outside his residence in New Town, Kolkata.
The marriage, conducted according to Vedic rituals, was attended only by close relatives. This is Ghosh’s first marriage, while Majumdar, 51, has a son from a previous marriage. She later told reporters she was happy and proud that Ghosh accepted her proposal, which had been made earlier this year.
Ghosh said the decision was driven by his desire to fulfil his mother’s wish. The couple reportedly met during morning walks at Kolkata’s Eco Park in 2021 and decided to formalise their relationship earlier this month during an IPL match at Eden Gardens.
