Indian Navy 's guided missile destroyer INS Surat on Thursday completed a successful test of a medium-range surface-to-air missile with an approximate range of 70 km. Meanwhile, Indian Air Force (IAF) executed ' Exercise Aakraman ', a comprehensive operational drill across the central sector, featuring its premier fighter aircraft, including the Rafale jets.
The timing of IAF and navy drills is significant as it comes two days after a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 people.
Following the incident, there has been an increase in tensions between India and Pakistan with the former suspending the Indus treaty. Pakistan responded with retaliatory measures by susending the 1972 Simla Agreement.
"The Indian Navy's latest indigenous guided missile destroyer INS Surat has successfully carried out a precision cooperative engagement of a sea-skimming target, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the Navy's defence capabilities ," the Navy said. "This achievement demonstrates India's growing prowess in indigenous warship design, development, and operations, and underscores the nation's commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing," it said.
The Navy indicated that this achievement reflects its dedication to protecting national maritime interests whilst supporting Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
IAF's 'Exercise Aakraman' included a comprehensive operational drill across the central sector, featuring its premier fighter aircraft, including the Rafale jets.
The exercise incorporated intensive ground strike operations practice across varied terrain, including plains and mountainous areas. The IAF's capabilities have been enhanced with modern armaments including meteor air-to-air missiles and advanced strike systems like Rampage and Rocks, strengthening its regional military position.
The IAF maintains two Rafale squadrons based at Ambala, Haryana and Hashimara, West Bengal. These advanced aircraft are central to the current exercise, which emphasises sophisticated mission scenarios.
Earlier during the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that 'India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their backers' and will 'pursue them to the ends of the Earth' to punish them 'beyond their imagination.'
